We were called to this little Corella who had fallen from his nest and wasn't quite able to fly yet. He is not far off flying and his parents were still circling overhead and calling (screeching) to their baby.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7u2eV57dDaIA_HM-LhY7QEQVJW-w9Irfeob_pYnvVJ3qRZ3E0QL799rxzNSX2DDBmePV4oIUFz9vZKOA3K-fY6fJaDPhdr6IRsmvh3eRSN6kxBTqcf3qQOecBfeizbxbXIlA4r7PYd0_g/s400/corella+in+tree.jpg" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: center;">I went to our local hardware and purchased a hanging plant pot, some coconut fibre and some rope. We were able to make him quite a cosy little nest. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgChMBcT0ujkI6RrCldwALOWcdVNQbnkdgsuBOk7r83K3NPiIOzvWAujHHUJzi2yU4zo6yI888ZR8rE9OP4nzzIT_mxY6_dujqSr1bNL0iaHAscGJ6BsQGGzvZfqczao7mFZKsKbltKZ2MW/s1600/corella+in+tree3.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgChMBcT0ujkI6RrCldwALOWcdVNQbnkdgsuBOk7r83K3NPiIOzvWAujHHUJzi2yU4zo6yI888ZR8rE9OP4nzzIT_mxY6_dujqSr1bNL0iaHAscGJ6BsQGGzvZfqczao7mFZKsKbltKZ2MW/s400/corella+in+tree3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Maddi attached the rope to a soft drink bottle and threw it up over the branch, we then attached the basket to it and popped in the Corella with a towel partly over him. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: center;">We hoisted him up in the tree in his little makeshift nest and hopefully his parents will come and feed him - fingers crossed. </div><br />

In the morning - I have been making up lamb bottles by six.<br />
Wombat bottles by fifteen.<br />
Possum feeds by two.<br />
A nectar mix for a New Holland Honeyeater (he unfortunately has passed away now) and six feeds for a tiny little Wombat joey who came in on Saturday right before I went to work here for the day.<br />
<br />
So I stashed the lamb in the office, the Wombat in my bra and off to work I went!<br />
<br />
The next day I was helping out at our local camera clubs national exhibition. On the way to town to do this I pulled two large wombats off the road. The first was a male who was so big I could barely move him and the second was a girl who broke my heart - she had a little joey in her pouch that had died also. If the people that had hit her had stopped they could have saved the baby.<br />
<br />
Sometimes this calling is hard.<br />
<br />
The new little wombat who has since been named Tessa was very, very cold.<br />
She weighs 432 gm and is doing really well.<br />
I am off to Healesville Sanctuary with her and Charlie on Tuesday.<br />
Tessa for a check up and Charlie hopefully for his last dental work! I haven't photographed Tessa yet - I like to let them settle in before pointing the big black thing in their face!<br />
<br />
In amongst all the craziness I did stop long enough to notice out of our bedroom window a family of Kookaburras that came to rest on one of the wombat enclosure fences. If you look really hard you can see another one in the tree above the shed. These kookas have lived around our property for years and it is great to see their babies every season.<br />

It was so warm and soft and cuddly and I would really love it if I had one!<br /><br />I think she was a little scared of the look on my face - because she then went on to tell me that Possums in New Zealand are pests - which is quite true. The Australian brush tailed possum was introduced into New Zealand in 1837 to establish a fur trade. They have no natural predators there and as such have become a pest.<br /><br />I agreed with her about them being a pest and then also said that I just wouldn't and couldn't wear a coat that was made of possum fur. I wasn't nasty or righteous.<br /><br />She didn't seem to understand why and we were left with one of those really uncomfortable moments where nobody knows what to say next.<br /><br />What would you have said to this lady?<br /><br /><br />Cheers from here?<br /><br /></div>Jindivick Wildlife Carehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03078486687772809979noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8596675445117288450.post-24397515666558520942010-09-05T20:18:00.005+10:002010-09-06T09:58:27.789+10:00April The Brushtail Possum<div style="text-align: center;">April has been with us for a week now. We believe that she had been trying to survive without her Mum for what could have been a couple of weeks. Her claws were very worn down - probably from trying to get underground and she was quite dehydrated. She was very stressed.<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">When she first came in she wanted to be held all the time. Whenever we put her down she cried and cried for us to pick her up again. Very heartbreaking and we were glad to - for a while! But long term it was just not possible. I had a thought and didn't think it would work - but after another day of carrying her around I decided to try out this idea.<br /><br />Success!!!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwCXdUokK7EIugo65guG2271YD3J9r1PAXlmfzQMSa-eAffYyipaE2cIRzJVK3wVV6OVpwJXj6-jIqICYcyUdWpCKejXcrZToXvosMczfBkCVWwkZw3ohRcdijYh5q3-WRXAeJs-wxi8hK/s1600/Tilli+January+13+2010+%289%29.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwCXdUokK7EIugo65guG2271YD3J9r1PAXlmfzQMSa-eAffYyipaE2cIRzJVK3wVV6OVpwJXj6-jIqICYcyUdWpCKejXcrZToXvosMczfBkCVWwkZw3ohRcdijYh5q3-WRXAeJs-wxi8hK/s400/Tilli+January+13+2010+%289%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512192610089851410" border="0" /></a><br />Tilli become a different Wombat after she began to suck on a dummy.<br />(a teat without a hole in it)<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwjY0jDnAR1D-Iah7r6ydd1fpbIErfsOc0wWFX7VxVcWhRk7F1x5cAlXklr0W54om3uVsK9GHFS-tvBQeQ5hTyHmeXQUIjYRPICRrCJai5R8vs4N1Y3mpevSOM8n6mkHQmJouylAiXKreb/s1600/Tilli+January+13+2010+%286%29.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwjY0jDnAR1D-Iah7r6ydd1fpbIErfsOc0wWFX7VxVcWhRk7F1x5cAlXklr0W54om3uVsK9GHFS-tvBQeQ5hTyHmeXQUIjYRPICRrCJai5R8vs4N1Y3mpevSOM8n6mkHQmJouylAiXKreb/s400/Tilli+January+13+2010+%286%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512192603065194770" border="0" /></a><br />The transformation was incredible!<br />She became a placid, happy and comfortable wombie - just how we like 'em!<br /><br />Here she is two months ago!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZAxf9h1vRlM-08cJ5Yys_yurHcHUyvHNTbuuOPPB6uOUoia7QOEQ4bZqs5TGDRXQ5Iv3WlDqPRViqJoBmi_A25hOJfx94UlW8xAuZ-aC4ZFE70Xu6vpLUcfTolTsZJlKXFCRtvsu0mDz7/s1600/Tilli+7+July+2010+%289%29.JPG"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZAxf9h1vRlM-08cJ5Yys_yurHcHUyvHNTbuuOPPB6uOUoia7QOEQ4bZqs5TGDRXQ5Iv3WlDqPRViqJoBmi_A25hOJfx94UlW8xAuZ-aC4ZFE70Xu6vpLUcfTolTsZJlKXFCRtvsu0mDz7/s400/Tilli+7+July+2010+%289%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512198702881893986" border="0" /></a><br />She has now moved into the pre-release enclosure with her burrow buddy Penny. Life must go on! We are moving on!<br />It's no secret what a horrid year this has been but we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get back to it.<br /><br />So here we are again at the start of another bushfire season for Victoria - hubby has already been to several small fires and is bracing for another tough season.<br /><br />Myself, I am readying myself for my last child to begin kinder next year, and my first child to begin high school. Middle child remains at primary school. What a range of emotions and hormones in this house at the moment!!! Poor hubby!<br /><br />I love my children to bits and I love to be with them and I love their company. I love school holidays and I love when they have days off. I even secretly like it when they are too sick to go school. I know - I'm a weirdo!<br />I used to (still do sometimes) do drive bys of the school at lunchtime just to see if I could see them in the playground.<br /><br />Most mums I know are gleefully rubbing their hands together at the school gate and happily waving their children off to school in anticipation of many hours to themselves. Me? Not so. I am so sad at losing my little right hand man. Who am I going to talk to? Who will I feed? Who will I comfort? Who will I play with? Who will I laugh and cry with?<br /><br /><br />Problem solved.<br /><br /><br /><br />Meet Penny.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv-7YwspVOAewXfS_dpkMO13tyMefxB4nkQ5iJId17FAUSu08uHQD7vhyQvyCKMhOWn6d2qqpGtLXJyJOJorW5YBRm5Tp0zsvH1TioOrbmGemgn5-KbvPuJjfyNsOkWbGGF0PbWQbvrZvK/s1600/677.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv-7YwspVOAewXfS_dpkMO13tyMefxB4nkQ5iJId17FAUSu08uHQD7vhyQvyCKMhOWn6d2qqpGtLXJyJOJorW5YBRm5Tp0zsvH1TioOrbmGemgn5-KbvPuJjfyNsOkWbGGF0PbWQbvrZvK/s400/677.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408195839208816962" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;">Approx 4 months old</span> <span style="font-size:78%;">(515gms)</span><br /><br />Before I had children I used to do this.<br />I had always shared stories with my children about the joys and rewards of raising orphaned and injured wildlife and we had always spoken about doing it again - together.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm2iM4nGeoVlJwvFHEScRbO7Dad6sITn9ijTF0adbDDMavOqU8vRjUyX9rwdUJbeYz8bjhbFtO2tKtYKJ_qQsWxzsHO5efdcek4soRMqeCNn2WKy_sc_Pg_4xmf5BPsiMj2yLUi5rHbiwJ/s1600/thursday+255.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm2iM4nGeoVlJwvFHEScRbO7Dad6sITn9ijTF0adbDDMavOqU8vRjUyX9rwdUJbeYz8bjhbFtO2tKtYKJ_qQsWxzsHO5efdcek4soRMqeCNn2WKy_sc_Pg_4xmf5BPsiMj2yLUi5rHbiwJ/s400/thursday+255.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408201300794641474" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;">Approx 5 Months old</span> <span style="font-size:78%;">(700gms)</span><br /><br />About 2 months ago we were on our way to spend a couple of days in the big smoke of Melbourne. We had travelled about ten minutes down the road when we came across a large Wombat in the middle of the road. She had been hit by a car or truck and she was dead, but inside her pouch was a very cold and sad baby wombat (a joey).<br /><br />We continued on our way as I frantically warmed the baby as best I could (at times like this I am grateful for big boobs!) Oh snigger if you wish - but it is the quickest way to warm them up!<br /><br />We called in to the wildlife shelter that I have volunteered for on and off over the years and left this little girl with them so we could continue our few days in Melbourne.<br /><br />I couldn't get this little girl out of my head. Neither could the kids. So we discussed the possibilties as a family and decided that she was a sign that we needed to take up wildlife care and rescue again. Together. Poor hubby!<br /><br />So we picked her up on the way home and dusted off all the old equipment and pouches and bottles and got right to it!<br /><br />Three weeks later --------<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Meet Bob!<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGcuIFMbrlYwQUPKhWS0wsfJcFZsSqnxPiuBvrczFQkP1egXdPVAzOGl1rEsAorbvuXAX9zppYYXsqJpYn7g7vxrDrxxCTB2xMWP66KR1toUTmIpegBb-EOxW1PJjEUfnxtmN5kiz57Vtp/s1600/thursday+326.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGcuIFMbrlYwQUPKhWS0wsfJcFZsSqnxPiuBvrczFQkP1egXdPVAzOGl1rEsAorbvuXAX9zppYYXsqJpYn7g7vxrDrxxCTB2xMWP66KR1toUTmIpegBb-EOxW1PJjEUfnxtmN5kiz57Vtp/s400/thursday+326.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5408206900677367346" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:78%;">Approx 3 months old (295 gms)</span><br /><br />So here we are now with two baby wombats who fulfil my need to feed and nurture and love at all times.<br /><br />I am so in love!!<br /><br />Life is good and it's getting better!<br /><br /><br />Cheers from here!<br /><span style="display: block;" id="formatbar_Buttons"><span class="down" style="display: block;" id="formatbar_JustifyCenter" title="Align Center" onmouseover="ButtonHoverOn(this);" onmouseout="ButtonHoverOff(this);" onmouseup="" onmousedown="CheckFormatting(event);FormatbarButton('richeditorframe', this, 11);ButtonMouseDown(this);"><img src="http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif" alt="Align Center" class="gl_align_center" border="0" /></span></span><br /><br /><br /></div>Jindivick Wildlife Carehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03078486687772809979noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8596675445117288450.post-24648743562890537952009-01-25T10:39:00.006+11:002009-01-25T11:37:25.544+11:00Monarch caterpillar to Monarch butterfly - how it all happens!<div style="text-align: center;">If you ever get to witness this - it will be one of the most incredible things you have seen.<br /><br />The Monarch butterfly, after mating, lays pin prick size eggs on the underside of the leaves of a swan plant.
